The Boomerang

The Boomerang

A Boomerang Paper Airplane describes a folded paper plane that flies back to you. Some designs fly in a vertical circle from low to high, others fly in a more traditional horizontal pattern. All are loads of fun for kids to try, though there are some tricks to attaining success.

I tried three different paper airplane designs to see which design is the easiest to build and which gives the most consistent boomerang action. The first, a kid-friendly design, has only a few folds and relies upon tail-flap adjustments to get the plane to fly back to you. The second, an origami design, also has few folds, but flies back in a vertical loop instead of horizontally.

The last, a more advanced plane folded by The Paper Airplane Guy, has numerous tricky folds, but results in a breathtakingly fun paper toy, even when the plane isn’t folded perfectly. My first plane, in fact, was quite the mess, but it performed well in spite of my questionable folding abilities.

Folding Instructions:

The Boomerang
To fold the Paper Plane ‘The Boomerang’ you should follow step to step the following sequence.
  • On the Upper Left side appears the paper sheet before folding, on the Upper Right Side, appears the sheet after folding it. The left animation indicates how you have to fold the paper sheet.
  • After The folding you should click the button ‘Next’ to see the next step.

  • You have to repeat the previous step, until you finish folding the Paper Airplane.
  • With the button ‘Back’ you will return to the previous step.
  • The button ‘Start’ takes you to the step 1 and the button ‘End’ takes you to the last step.

Steps to create the boomerang paper aplane:

The first step to create a boomerang paper airplane is to take a square piece of paper and measure to make sure it is a perfect square. You must then fold all of the corners of the cut of paper into the middle and then fold in half. The wings must then be folded down on the two chosen side. The final step is to fold the wings up to give the crease and cut of paper it’s boomerang like shape. The video ends with examples of the type of flight that can be expected from a boomerang shaped paper airplane.

This is a fast and fun activity! Make your boomerang plane of brown paper and use bright coloured paper shapes, pipe-cleaners and whatever else you have to hand to decorate it. Older children can decorate their boomerang planes in aboriginal style using poster paints so they can look like a wooden stick or a real boomerang stick.

Tutorial for how to fold and how to fly the Boomerang Airplane This model works best folded from ordinary printer paper (8 1/2-inch by 11-inch). A4 paper should also work. It can also be called a Flying Magic Carpet or Flying Staircase.

Getting this model to come back to you takes a lot of experimentation. I sometimes even have trouble getting it to come back. Experiment with the angle you throw it at, how hard you throw it and how much the pleats are stretched out. The basic principle/assumption that I used to design it is that the wider and shorter a paper airplane is the harder it is to get it to go straight! So, for instance, if you notice it naturally turns to the left, then try to tilt it more to the left as you throw it to make it curve even more. Stretching the pleats out more will give it more lift and make it wider, which may help to get it to curve more. Good luck!

Take a sheet of paper A4 8 X 12in (21 x 30cm), and follow the instructions described below step by step Paper Folding Origami. Try to keep the wings as horizontal as possible, by this I mean that you should have no anhedral or dihedral because swept wings take care of roll stability

How to throw the paper airplane The Boomerang

In order to throw The Boomerang far, you must do the following:
  • First, you will need to use your dominant or stronger hand.
  • Next, you will need to throw the airplane as if you were throwing a baseball, taking a slight forwards step as you throw it as well.
  • Finally, you will need to make sure that you release the paper airplane at the proper point of your throw, at the maximum part of the arc and not when your arm starts arcing downwards.

This Amazing Paper Airplane Is Just Like A Boomerang

It majestically flies through the air for an astonishing 20 seconds after being thrown out of a second floor window at a high school in Japan. Soaring, dipping and diving for what seems like an eternity, it then incredibly returns to the same spot from where it was launched. Ikuya Hara posted the footage to Twitter last Thursday, which is now going viral: the folding technique used to create the airplane is “above basic“ but “there doesn’t appear to be anything unique about it to make it boomerang.” from:

You can get a lot of paper airplanes to fly back to you by adjusting one of the wings. Takuo toda’s record plane makes an awesome boomerand :D
[Stu Fisher]
I have a quick question: how do you design? is it more “pre-designed” or trial and error? or a combination of both? love your stuff by the way
[Kishan Kishhan L Abola]
Thanks it really came back.
It’s US Letter size paper that he’s using if anyone is wondering.
[Rumpelstinski Mc ]
And how do I make my nit US letter paper that size?
[evan apalla]
Can u tell me the paper size or type to use? I really think I did all the folds but somehow it doesn’t fly like a boomerang.
[Henry Balogh]
How do u fold a piece of regular paper, without cutting or gluing and throw it away from u and still come back?! It took me the first 10,000 tries to fly it but once I got the hang of it, it was all worth it. I just made it like an hour and a half ago, and I could do this all day.
